MKB2 IMPACT MICHAEL K BRYANT II
CATALYZE
VANCOUVER B.C.
CONTEXT:
The commercial and Broadway axis serve as a major transit and cultural corridor in the Vancouver area. One can find many artistic boutiques and ethnic eateries along these thoroughfares. The station, which is situated at the corner of these two streets, is one of the busiest sky train stations and bus stops in Vancouver and has a total of two platforms - one on the northern side of Commercial blvd and the other on the southern side. There is a current need for the expansion and renovation of the southern station located on the expo line due to the high traffic demand. The site of the south platform currently houses a few small businesses and a busy
Safeway Market.
THE METHODOLOGY:
The idea of a catalyzing future came to fruition when approaching the issues of an aging station, the need for residential density increase, and a large projected increase in pedestrian traffic. CATALYZE takes the existing essence of the neighborhood and applies the loci as the root to the solution to the issues presented.
THE APPROACH:
The site is broken up into 3 different zone types (transit, public, private/mixed use).
These 3 different zone types are interwoven with one another. The three zone types establish a clear transit zone, creates a variety of different public spaces interwoven with a variety of residential/ mixed use types.
THE DESIGN:
The design of the station and urban development complement one another through contrasting rhythms. The mixed use developments are closed and rigid with abrupt roof formations. The station serves as a mediator and complement, as the roof canopy formations are smooth and subtle while the station itself is very open and revealing.

SITE ORGANIZATION
Transit Zones
A neighborhood promenade separates two fare zones. The north zone acts as a transfer gateway between the bus loading zones and covered alley which houses boutiques and eateries. The south zone provides an outlet to the promenade and alley shops. Users can access the other train platforms via a sky bridge.
Public Zones
The public zones consist of small parks, promenades, and squares. They provide a backdrop for various outdoor activities.
Private Mixed/ Use Zone
The residential zones closest to Commercial St consist of low rise mixed use buildings, matching the existing building pattern and showcasing the station. High density mixed use is concentrated at the center of the site. Medium density residential is situated near the back, providing a smooth transition to the surrounding neighborhood.
